Born in Santiago de Cuba on December 2, 1938, José Bacardi was studying abroad when the Cuban Revolution began, preventing his return to the island. He completed his degree in Business Administration in the United States and later joined Bacardi, working in both Brazil and Puerto Rico. After several years, he and his wife settled in Puerto Rico, where he founded a construction company in partnership with his mother. He is the founder and owner of Emilio Bacardi Group—named in honor of his father—which owns three shopping centers and has successfully developed multiple residential projects.
